Centre for Social Ethics and Policy
CSEP staff at a conference in Athens
The Centre for Social Ethics and Policy (CSEP) is one of Europe's leading institutions, undertaking research and teaching courses in bioethics and biolaw.
The Centre which can fairly claim to be the leading one of its kind in Europe, was founded in 1986 and is directed by Margaret Brazier and Soren Holm and co-directed by John Harris.
Other members of the School who also work within the Centre include Rebecca Bennett, Iain Brassington, John Coggon, Sarah Devaney, Charles Erin, Anne-Maree Farrell, Simona Giordano, Matti Hayry, Kirsty Keywood, Muireann Quigley and Catherine Stanton. As a reflection of the extent of its research activity, the Centre also includes a number of research staff: Sarah Chan and Catherine Rhodes.
The Centre has been at the forefront of pioneering work in medical education and in 1996 offered the first Intercalated BSc in medical ethics and law for medical students in the UK. This has now become a Master of Science degree available to all year 4 medical students from UK medical schools.
Over the past seven years the Centre has been awarded five major research programmes by the European Commission under the biomedicine and health research programme (DGXII) and research funding amounts to more than £1m.
John Harris is Research Director in a new research centre, the Institute for Science, Ethics and Innovation, which is based in the School of Law. Sir John Sulston is chair of the institute which focuses on the ethical questions raised by science and technology in the 21st century. iSEI website
Mental Health Act
Neil Allen is co-ordinating the training of the Mental Health Act 1983 Section 12, recently updated 2007, for over 500 approved clinicians. Funded by the NHS this course brings the clinicians up to date with the changes in the revised Act.
Studentships
More than £300,000 funding is available for postgraduate studentships in bioethics and biolaw. Following a substantial strategic award from the Wellcome Trust to the Institute for Science, Ethics and Innovation (iSEI), we are able to offer generous financial support to outstanding applicants, through a number of CSEP's postgraduate programmes (Masters and Doctoral). Studentships have now been allocated for 2010/11. Visit the iSEI website for information on future funding.

Short online CPD courses in Ethics and Law
We have now launched a comprehensive package of short online courses in medical ethics and law.
These courses are designed to replace traditional CPD ‘study days’ with targeted electronic courses that can be completed at the convenience of participants from any internet enabled computer. This allows health care professionals to maintain their continuing professional development using innovative and stimulating material of the highest quality in a flexible way that fits easily around other commitments. These courses have a number of advantages of other CPD courses in this area:
- You can study when suits you and from home.
- You get plenty of time to do the online courses and so can spread your study over weeks and months.
- You can complete the courses quickly online without the need to visit a library or consult any other material.
- If you wish to follow up any of the work that you do on these courses you will have full library access (including e-journals) while working on these courses.
- The courses are developed by leading academics in this field from one of the most prestigious Centres and Institutes in the world.
- The courses are easily accessible and require no prior knowledge.
- The courses are targeted at health care professionals but also open to non-healthcare professionals with an interest in these areas.

In January 2007 we launched our innovative Doctoral Programme in Bioethics and Medical Jurisprudence (PhD) which allows students to develop a PhD in this area based on producing 3-4 published or publishable papers.
