LLM/MA/PG Diploma/PG Certificates in Health Care Ethics and Law (Distance Learning)

The following programmes are available for entry in 2012:

Intakes are in September of each year.

No attendance is required at the University.

LLM/MA in Health Care Ethics and Law

Students on the LLM and MA complete six course units and an independent research dissertation. This includes the choice of two optional course units. Those registered on the LLM in Health Care Ethics and Law would need to select two 'law' optional course units and write a broadly 'legal' dissertation, whilst those registered on the MA in Health Care Ethics and Law would need to select two 'ethics' optional course units and write a broadly 'ethics-based' dissertation. Descriptions of course units can be found by clicking on the 'course unit descriptions' tab on the left hand side of this screen.

These programmes aim to provide the highest quality training in health care ethics and health care law.

Students will gain an expert knowledge and understanding of ethical and medico-legal theories, and the skills needed to apply them to real world scenarios in a diverse range of contexts. You will cover a wide variety of ethical and legal subjects including autonomy, consent, refusal of treatment, confidentiality, the moral status of the fetus, resource allocation, genetic testing, HIV testing, medical malpractice, clinical negligence, organ and tissue transplantation, fertility treatment, genetic manipulation, research ethics, stem cell research and euthanasia.

Although no attendance at the University is required for this programme, we do encourage all students to attend Study Days that are held each year, as a way of meeting both staff and fellow students involved in the programme.

Students are also provided with one-to-one tutorial support from staff at the Centre via email, telephone or on campus throughout the programme. Students are also encouraged to interact with each other and their tutors via 'Blackboard', which is a virtual learning environment.
