About your Studies

Why did you undertake a postgraduate course?

I believe that, by undertaking a postgraduate course, I would gain a deeper theoretical understanding of what I am studying which translates to a greater sense of satisfaction when I know that I have explored and tackled all aspects of different subjects.

Why did you choose your course and why did you choose to study at The University of Manchester?

At the point in time when I was deciding on which course to apply to, International Financial Law stood out as the obvious choice based on the financial and economic climate we were facing then. The course also offered subjects which I have not studied during my LL.B and that made the course even more interesting.
One huge benefit in studying at the University of Manchester is the massive pool of supplementary resources made available to students so we are able to proceed with our studies and research easily. It doesn't hurt either that choosing to pursue my LL.M at the same University after completing my LL.B entitled me a 20% loyalty fee rebate!

What do you enjoy about your course/research?

I enjoyed my course mostly based on the fact that all the subjects were new to me and I only had 1 year to fully grasp that new knowledge. The research that I undertook was also much more intensive but writing a 8000-word essay has never been so challenging yet enjoyable.

What new skills did you learn through your postgraduate study?

I learnt that time management is extremely important when you only have 1 year to study 5-6 new subjects, finish 3 pieces of course work, 2 research papers and also sit for examinations in both semesters! Thankfully, the School conducts a weekly Law Research Skills session to guide us through the efficient way in tackling research papers and dissertations, at the same time giving us pointers on how to further improve our writing abilities.

How did the course suite your needs? (e.g. structure, contact with lecturers/supervisors etc)

The course has benefited me in terms of the areas of law I am looking to specialise in the future with the flexibility in allowing us to tailor the course to our individual preferences by having a substantial list of options for students to choose from. This, together with the optimal lecturer:student ratio provided for an interactive learning experience, allowing us to feel and be a part of the course.

How many hours did you study on campus and how many hours self study did you have to do?

The amount of time allocated for lectures, seminars and other workshops were approximately 15-20 hours a week. This varies according to the number of options one chooses to take. Individual self study would take up another 20 hours depending on the number of seminars that week and if there was course work to submit or presentations to prepare.

What are your future plans and how do you think your postgraduate have helped you achieve them?

I am in the midst of completing the bar course in Singapore and am looking forward to starting my Practice Training Contract with a reputable law firm. The course has definitely helped me in deciding which area of law I would want to specialise in, therefore shaping my future career path.

Away from your studies:

What do you like about the city?

I love Manchester because it is such a vibrant city on its own- an accessible transport system, a wide variety of excellent cuisines and the shopping is great! As a Singaporean, I am obviously delighted to know that there are many cafes and restaurants serving up local delicacies and Chinatown is full of yummy oriental eateries and supermarkets which makes cooking with friends that much merrier!

What do you do in your spare time?

I travel a lot with my friends thanks to the low-fare budget airlines operating from Manchester airport to different parts of Europe such as Italy, Greece and the Scandinavia. Deeper friendships are forged and wonderful memories are etched in minds when fellow Singaporeans get together over coffee, home cooked meals and celebrating special occasions all while being miles away from home.

How affordable is Manchester?

Manchester is relatively affordable for students as compared to other major cities in the United Kingdom. For the budget conscious there are always cheap eateries around the campus and places are easy to get to by foot. World class restaurants and entertainment venues are also available for special occasions. One can never have nothing to do in Manchester!

Finally how would you describe your time at Manchester University to a friend from home?

My time at the University of Manchester has been the most fruitful and satisfying 4 years of my life. The education I received has been invaluable and I am glad I chose a University which puts its student welfare at its core. The friends I met here have become some of my very closest friends, sharing the same wonderful experience I had in Manchester.
