About your studies…
I wanted to challenge myself and see if I could focus intensely on one specific area of the law over an extended period of time. I felt this would relate well to my plans in the working world.
Why did you choose your course and why did you choose to study at The University of Manchester?
I wanted to learn a more specific area of law, especially as it applied to my future goals, which was cross border business transactions. I chose the University of Manchester because I felt I had received excellent instructions and lectures during my undergraduate experience there and I knew it had a respected program, which was recognised by the top international law firms.
What did you enjoy about your course/research?
It allowed me to focus on a topic of my interest. At the beginning the supervisors helped you in developing your own thought process and then you were encouraged to build on your own ideas and opinions. It was a good mix of supervision and independent work.
What new skills did you learn through your postgraduate studies?
Most importantly I learnt skills of research, analytical theory and putting my opinions into logical written presentation.
How did the course suite your needs? (e.g. structure, contact with lecturers/supervisors etc)
The course was a balanced mix of exams, written reports and large research papers. Contact with lecturers and supervisors was always accessible and never a problem. They all had an open door policy when it came to teaching and answering questions.
What are your future plans and how do you think your postgraduate study helped you achieve them.
Working for an international law firm, I am already in the midst of achieving what I had hoped to do when I had finished my postgraduate study. I am now applying what I learned theoretically during my postgraduate study in a more practical forum.
Away from your studies:
What do you like about the city?
Manchester is a place with true character, which offers everything you could ask for, be it nightlife, theatre, restaurants and world class sporting events. It is also very welcoming to students and was an easy gateway for travelling to other parts of Europe during your spare time.
What do you do in your spare time?
I enjoy travelling, sports, listening to music and reading in my spare time.
How affordable is Manchester?
Manchester is like every other major international city; it has all types of places both affordable to the student all the way to high-end for special occasions when you want to treat yourself. Compared to many cities in Europe, it is much better value for money.
Finally…
How would you describe your time at Manchester University to a friend from home?
One of the best experiences of my life and a time which helped shape me as a person. Meeting people from all over the world allowed me to learn more than just academic studies and also allowed me to form lifelong friendships with people I have already begun to visit in their home countries.
