Mental Health Act (1983) training

Interactive training for mental health professionals - Section 12(2) induction and refresher training.

We offer training which is approved by the North of England Approvals Panel to provide the necessary accreditation to clinicians undertaking their responsibilities under the Mental Health Act 1983.

Following this course you will:

  • Have a broad understanding of the MHA civil admission provisions, focusing on MHA ss 2, 3, 4, and 5.
  • Be familiar with the roles of s12(2) doctors and others involved in MHA assessments.
  • Understand the meaning of, and be able to refer to, the criteria for detention under MHA Part 2 when making a medical recommendation.
  • Be able to describe the guidance contained in the 2015 Code of Practice relevant to the role and responsibilities of a s12(2) doctor when undertaking a MHA assessment.
  • Be able to use knowledge of the impact that an assessment may have on patients and their carers to inform the approach to an assessment.
  • Be able to complete the statutory forms lawfully and in accordance with best practice.
  • Be familiar with the interface with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 with regard to admission and treatment.
