Medical Law and Ethics in the Media Spotlight
CSEP has received funding from the British Academy to host a conference at the British Academy on 8th and 9th November 2010 on Medical Law and Ethics in the Media Spotlight. Those who have agreed to take part in the conference are Baroness Greenfield, Mr Geoffrey Robertson QC, Baroness Deech and Baroness Warnock. Beyond the Body? Perspectives on Enhancement
The Institute for Science Ethics and Innovation is hosting, in collaboration with the Wellcome Trust, a conference on enhancement on 9th, 10th and 11th April 2010 at Chancellors Hotel and Conference Centre.The conference will explore new bioethical, sociological, technological and legal approaches to human enhancement and there will be particular emphasis on cybertechnologies and what it means to be a mechanised human. The fees for attending are £20 for one day, £30 for both days. All conference participants will be able to attend Prof Inez de Beaufort's session on Friday 9th April. Public Guest Lecture: Philippe Bourgois
Philippe Bourgois (University of Pennsylvania) will be giving a public lecture on Theorizing Abuse: An Ethnographic Perspective on the War on Drugs in the US Inner City on Friday 30th April at 3p.m. Cordingley Lecture Theatre, Humanities Bridgeford Street Building. British Humanist Association Lecture
Prof John Harris will be chairing a lecture by AC Grayling entitled "Darwin and the Darwinian Controversy" which has been organised by the British Humanist Association. The lecture will be on Wednesday 18th November at 18.30 in the Main Auditorium, St Peter's House, University of Manchester, Precinct Centre, Oxford Road, Manchester, M13 9GH. On the Music of Life: A new paradigm for biology
The Institute for Science, Ethics and Innovation and the Centre for Social Ethics and Policy along with Manchester Centre for Integrative Systems Biology are delighted to announce a public lecture by Professor Denis Noble focusing on the philosophical aspects of his research. The lecture is on 25th November at 16.00 in the Lecture Theatre of the Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre (MIB - North Campus) map Building 16. All are welcome. Prof Noble is one of the pioneers of Systems Biology and developed the first viable mathematical model of the working heart in 1960. Together with international collaborators, his team has used supercomputers to create the first virtual organ: the virtual heart.
Public Lecture: Prof John Braithwaite - Regulatory Imagination and Justice Research
Pioneering criminology, regulation and restorative justice scholar, Professor John Braithwaite, will deliver the First Annual Public Lecture of the Regulation, Security and Justice Research Centre on Wednesday 30 September 2009 at 2.00pm in University Place, Oxford Road, Manchester. Internationally renowned, Professor Braithwaite is founder of the Regulatory Institutions Network (RegNet) at the Australian National University where he is currently working on a comparative peacebuilding project.

Modernising and Harmonising Consumer Contract Law
The Manchester Law School and Munster's Centre for European Private Law hosted a conference bringing together leading contract law scholars and policy makers from across Europe to consider what elements should be in a modern consumer contract law and the extent to which the laws of member states should be harmonised. This conference was held on 12-13 January 2009, Williamson Building, The University of Manchester. The conference webpage remains available for participants.
