The ECU's Athena SWAN Charter was established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine) employment in higher education and research. The award was extended, in May 2015, to arts, humanities, social sciences, law and business and to consider gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women.

Professor Toby Seddon, Head of the School of Law, said: "This is a wonderful achievement and the result of much hard work from a wide range of colleagues. We have a lot to be proud of but recognise that there is work to be done. Our action plan will begin the process of delivering on this commitment to gender equality.”
